Third SNIEDA awards launched - by Vimbai Karumazondo

WINDHOEK – The Joint Consultative Council (JCC) yesterday launched the third Sam Nujoma Innovative Enterprise Development Awards (SNIEDA).

Speaking at the launch was Founding Father of the Namibian Nation and Patron of SNIEDA, Dr Sam Nujoma, who commended JCC for hosting the event, adding that its main objective is to recognise and reward business service excellence, innovation and the best practices in service provision to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Namibia.

“In its third year, SNIEDA will honour and celebrate Namibia’s business service providers through the acknowledgement of innovative business processes, product development, enterprise support and sustainability and overall business success,” he said.

Advanced Training for Namibian Business Models using Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is software which can be freely used, modified and distributed. FOSS offers a number of different opportunities. Developers are able to customize, change or add to open source software and join in global open production processes. This can help stimulate local innovation and growth in the IT sector. FOSS allows local value chains to be tapped, instead of forcing customers to rely on foreign software vendors.

The localised training is based on ict@innovation's regional course "Advanced African Business Models with Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)" implemented by the two main training partners Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (AITI-KACE) and UNU-MERIT.

From Turkey with love – new businesses - by Desie Heita

ISTANBUL, Turkey – Business has never been this good for two Namibian entrepreneurs who attended the just-ended trade exhibition here.

One of the business people has secured an opportunity to work with international fashion retail houses, while the other was able to find a new building materials supplier at more favourable rates than the current South African supplier.

Northern-based construction contractor company and retailer of building materials, Kambwa Trading, has signed a new supply agreement with Turkish suppliers of construction materials, and the first shipment – consisting of nearly 2 000 wheelbarrows – is already en route to Walvis Bay.

SME’s to lure Turkish investors - by Desie Heita

ISTANBUL, Turkey – A fashion designer, building contractor and an inventor of Omaguni jam are three young people who were part of the Namibian business delegation at the official opening of the Turkish World Trade Bridge today.

Having borrowed a page from South Africa’s investment model, Namibia is hoping that her presence at the event can lure investors to set up exporting bases in Namibia.

The plan of attack, revealed the Ministry of Trade and Industry which mounted the trade excursion to Turkey, is for the country to promote itself as “as a desirable investment destination and explore the prospects of Turkish companies relocating their manufacturing activities to Namibia”.
