First micro-finance bank gets licence to operate

NAMIBIA’s first micro-finance bank is a reality after the Bank of Namibia (BoN) yesterday granted Fides Bank Namibia a permanent banking licence.

“Fides Bank is now permitted to engage in formal or informal banking activities with any person in Namibia, especially soliciting public deposits,” BoN said in a statement.
Financial Systems Development Services AG (Fides) has start-up capital of N$15 million, and will provide financial services to Namibians who are economically active, but who do not have a fixed salary.

8th IVETA All Africa Regional Conference

The government of Namibia through its Ministry of Education and the Namibia Training Authority will be hosting the 8th IVETA All Africa Regional Conference in its coastal town, Swakopmund, from the 18th - 21st April 2010, at the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre.

The conference Skills for the Future will bring together national, regional and international VET experts for 3 days of workshops, interaction and information sharing while enjoying the hospitality and uniqueness of Namibia.

Sustainable Microenterprise and Development Program

The Carsey Institute’s Sustainable Microenterprise and Development Program (SMDP) provides training and networking opportunities for practitioners in the fields of microfinance, enterprise development, social enterprise, community based and rural development. The SMDP offers an intensive and highly relevant professional development training experience with a concentration on program planning, implementation, and impact evaluation.

The winning companies have been awarded the prize money of N$10 000 each, a trophy and a
framed Certificate indicating them as the new ambassadors of business service provision
in Namibia.

INTRODUCTION

During the last decade of the twentieth century, a growing number of small businesses and industries (SMEs) were established in developing countries. It is a recognised major business trend that in the 21st century, SMEs will generate an even greater number of jobs than big industry. Furthermore, it has been estimated that in future, personal-consumption expenditures will increase significantly and therefore the service sector is likely to become more competitive.
